Reverend Alphonsus E. Platt, Pastor ,  MA, M. Ed.

Reverend Alphonsus Platt was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was educated in the Newark Public School system
where he graduated from Weequahic High School. He has an extensive educational background. He has done research
and studied at Kean University, Seton Hall University, and Yad Vashem Holocaust Center in Israel. He has earned Bachelor’
s and Master’s degrees in Elementary Education from Jersey City State College and a second Master’s degree in
Educational Leadership from The College of New Jersey. He has also earned a Certificate in Christian Ministry from New
York Theological Seminary.  

He has a music background as a professional gospel musician. As a drummer he has performed and recorded nationally
and internationally since he was 16 years old. He has recorded  with artists on Savoy and other record labels. He co-
produced an album with Alvin Darling and Derek Jackson on I AM Records. He also had a cameo appearance as a gospel
drummer in the movie “The Dream Team” featuring Michael Keaton. He is currently the Vice President of Operations for
Joyland Records.

As Pastor of the NIA Fellowship Baptist Church in East Orange, NJ and Principal of the Hurden Looker Elementary School in
Hillside, NJ, his bi-vocational positions allow him to minister to various communities on a daily basis. He has worked in the
Hillside Public School District since 1982 as a coach, teacher, and administrator. He has also worked as an adjunct
professor at New Jersey City University. He has been the Pastor of NIA Fellowship Baptist Church since September of
2004. He was installed as Pastor in January 2005. Before arriving at NIA Fellowship Baptist Church, Rev. Platt was the
Assistant Pastor of the Good Neighbor Baptist Church in Newark, NJ under the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. George Blackwell,
III.

Rev. Platt preaches with power, passion, and conviction. His desire is to make the church so relevant in the community,
that when people come to Christ, they will be compelled to strengthen the community socially and economically. He
believes that God wants the church to be better not just bigger. He has been a guest speaker at various elementary
schools, high schools, colleges, community organizations, and churches. He has traveled nationally as a lobbyist for
education and internationally throughout Europe and Israel studying Holocaust education. He is an active member of the
United Clergy of the Oranges.

Reverend Platt has made a positive impact on the lives of thousands of young people throughout his years in the field of
education and ministry. He has been  dedicated to his professions. He works hard to improve the quality of life on a daily
basis. He believes that the healing formula to help today’s youth of America is a mixture of God, Education, and Love. He
is married to Gwendolyn Platt and has two children named Marcus and Parminder.
